Secret to the 龙(long)evity of your Eyes!

Chinese New Year is a jubilant celebration that embraces various traditions and customs. From the delicious CNY snacks (such as pineapple tarts!) to the heartening laughter echoing through homes as families reunite, every aspect of this festive occasion is filled with much significance. Among the cherished customs, the one children eagerly anticipate is the age-old tradition of receiving red packets, symbolizing good fortune and prosperity for the coming year. This year, as we welcome the year of the dragon (龙), how can one ensure proper eye care whilst enjoying all the CNY goodies? Let us delve into 3 essential ways to safeguard your vision during this vibrant celebration!

Eat Well, Live Well

  1. Elevate your Yusheng with more carrots and salmon

Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A, essential for maintaining good vision. Additionally, salmon is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which contributes to visual development and the overall health of your retina. As you toss the ingredients high for good luck, remember to heap on ample servings of carrots and salmon to ensure a year brimming with clear and vibrant sight!

2. Make a conscious effort to include veggies in your steamboat.

Rather than opting for processed food like fish ball or sausage, incorporate  leafy green vegetables like spinach, cabbage, and broccoli instead. These vegetables are rich in antioxidants and vitamins that promote eye health, especially at the macula (our central vision which allows you see most things clearly!). Additionally, consider adding eggs to your hotpot, as they contain lutein and zeaxanthin, essential nutrients that lower the risk of eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration (causes vision loss) and cataract (cloudiness in the eye).

3. Don’t forget to drink water.

During this period where indulging in CNY goodies is tempting, staying hydrated is crucial as these treats are often high in sodium and sugar. Drinking water regularly ensures that your eyes remain moisturized and lubricated, reducing the risk of dryness and irritation. Therefore, alongside teas and sweet beverages, make it a point to drink plenty of water throughout the celebrations.
